Sumo Tour: A Day in the Life of a Sumo Wrestler
ScheduleWatch early morning practice→ Socialize with sumo wrestlers→ Chat with the stablemaster while enjoying chankonabe (sumo meal)
A typical day in the life of a sumo wrestler starts with early morning practice. It's a spectacle to see these powerful wrestlers battling it out in these morning sessions. You will witness up close the massive size of these wrestlers, which could not be truly appreciated from the sidelines.
Straight after that it will be time to enjoy a meal of chanko with oyakata (master). Chanko is a meal that the wrestlers eat everyday to get bigger. You'll also be able to talk to the oyakata about a sumo wrestler's everyday life and gain a deeper insight into the sport of sumo.
| Feedback from our participants: "Excellent. Really enjoyed getting an insight into a day in the life of a sumo wrestler." (British, 20`s) ♦ "It was a very interesting experience to see the sumos restle up front and feel the strength they need to fight their opponent." (Malaysian, 30s) ♦ "Very intimate because we interact with the sumo wrestler face to face. The stable master is very accommodating." (Filipino, 50) |
Oyakata
This sumo dojo is home to 8 rikishi (sumo wrestlers) and one gyouji(sumo referee). Rikishi traditionally exert themselves to the limit during training sessions, so to watch these first hand is an extraordinary experience. After this, talk to the sumo wrestlers and ask as many questions as you would like- make sure you make the most of this amazing opportunity! I look forward to seeing you here soon!
