Original Paper Lanterns & A Stroll Through Asakusa
Schedule
Explanation on how to write characters using brush and ink→ Write down the characters you have chosen→ Guided tour of Sensoji Temple and its surroundings
Asakusa is a popular spot amongst tourists. The big, red paper lanterns that hang in a line from the Kaminari Gate (the entrance to Asakusa) to Sensoji Temple are icons of Asakusa. These lanterns are made from Japanese paper called washi and have special Edo-moji style calligraphy painted on them with ink. In this program, you will cover more than 150 years of history as you talk with a skilled lantern-maker who will explain the lantern-making process and calligraphy. You will also have a chance to write your own calligraphy on a paper lantern, making your very own ideal Japanese souvenir. After that, you will walk through the temple grounds and take in more of Asakusa's rich history.
