Along with Kyoto, Nikko is one of the best places to see ancient Japan.  Here you can combine a visit to the lavish Toshogu shrine with the idyllic beauty of the Nikko national park.  Kinugawa Onsen is located nearby Nikko.  This area has become one of the best places to experience the healing powers of a Japanese hot spring.  Both Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen are about 2 hours from Tokyo on the JR or Tobu lines.
