Tour Highlights

* Noh is a traditional stage art established in 14th century and a kind of symbolic drama performed by songs and music and expressed through the word yugen ("elegant, refined, and elusive beauty"). Its subjects are taken from history or classical literature. Its most obvious characteristic is that the main actor performs while wearing a mask of exceptional beauty. Takigi Noh is a kind of performance styles conducted on a temporary open-air stage lighted up with bonfire. Lighted up by fire Noh performance will get more yugen elegant world.
* Kichijoji Gessoji Temple Takigi Noh are performed by the first-class players and the programs of this year are Kagetsu and Nomori. Kagetsu is the story that a father finds his disappeared son by chance. Some dances by the son are highlights. Nomori is the story of a devil who has a mysterious mirror. Kyogen ( spoken comic drama )and shimai ( dance) are also performed.
* The lecture by Mr. Noh Enthusiast who has been loving Noh and watching it over 50 years. The history of Noh, masks, costumes, stages, musical instruments. stories, players and so on. You have time to ask some questions after the lecture.
* The museum of National Noh Theater holds special exhibition of Noh masks and costumes. Visit there and appreciate works of art with your own eyes.

Important Remarks

When it rains Takigi ( bonfire ) Noh will be changed to Rosoku ( candle ) Noh in different facility. The performance is held at night on the open-air theater.  Bring warm clothes in preparation for cold weather.
