What to do When Visiting a Shrine
Many travelers visit shrines when they come to Japan. But most probably don't really know what they're supposed to be doing. Here is a brief outline of what's expected of you when you visit a shrine.
First, before entering the shrine, run water over your hands and rinse out your mouth at the water area. First take the ladle in your right hand, scoop up some water and pour it over your left hand. Then, switch hands and repeat, pouring water over your right hand. Then, holding the ladle in your right hand now, pour water into your left hand and rinse out your mouth. You have finished the first step. Always remember not to put your lips to the ladle or drink the water.
Next, when there is an offering box or a bell, you can make a small offering and/or ring the bell. If not, you can skip to the next step: Take two deep bows and clap your hands twice, pray, speak words of gratitude, then take one last, deep bow. Congratulations, you've successfully completed your visit to a Shinto shrine.
