Area Information

Roppongi

Roppongi is a famous night spot for foreign residents and tourists.

Stores catering to foreign guests began popping up after World War II.  Discos, bars and other night spots began proliferating in the late 1960s.

The birthplace of cutting-edge design and new stores, Roppongi, with the Roppongi intersection at its center, is the most well-known international hub in Japan among foreigners.

The name Roppongi, which literally means six trees, dates back to when six pine trees stood in the area.

In recent years, the area has witnessed a major urban redevelopment project, with Roppongi Hills opening in 2003 on the former site of TV Asahi.

A 54-story office tower is at the heart of this immense conglomeration of facilities that includes some 200 shops and restaurants as well as a theater, hotel and the TV Asahi broadcasting center.

A tranquil garden adjacent to the high rise symbolizes the harmonious union of modern architecture with nature, and is fast becoming a popular tourist destination.

In March 2007, the next phase of the redevelopment project, Tokyo Midtown, opened on the former site of the Ministry of Defense.

The complex houses restaurants, shops, the Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo, offices and private residences. It is yet another reason to visit Roppongi.
