Area Information

Meguro

Meguro Ward is one of the southern wards of Tokyo’s 23 wards. It borders Shibuya, Setagaya, Shinagawa, and Ota Wards. It has a great deal of greenery including ponds, rivers, parks, temples, and history museums; it also a very cultural area and has trendy residential areas. In the parks you can fish and ride ponies; there are also many people who like to walk their dogs in this area. People, who do not live in the area, will take their dogs to these parks, just to walk them. You will be able to see deep exchanges between dog lovers. This is a residential area, but it has shopping and good restaurants. The boutiques and general stores along the riverside are recommended.

Meguro is home to the African Embassy. There are also International Companies located in this area; therefore, there are many non-Japanese people in Meguro. Since there are people of many nationalities living in this area there is a good selection of international food available.

If you are in Meguro for shopping the Department stores are a good choice, but you should also stop by Gonnosuke Street. From the west exit of Meguro Station if you walk up Gonnosuke Street about 3km you will reach the Otori Shrine, which was built in the Heian Period (794-1185), along this walk there are about 250 shops. Otori Shrine has a festival in November commemorating Bird Day. There is an arcade with a retro image. For the sake of attracting many university and high school, the atmosphere is kept very simple.

Inside there is a marble altar and stained glass windows. About a 3 min. walk from Meguro Station there is another Wedding Ceremony Place; this is called Meguro Gajoen. You can experience both Japanese and Western Style Weddings. Inside Gajoen is a very elegant historical building. The Japanese style garden is also very beautiful, with waterfalls. There are also authentic Beijing Style Restaurants as well as well as traditional Japanese restaurants. If you just have lunch here, you will feel as if you are eating in style.
