Area Information
Jimbocho
A Bibliophile's Paradise
Jimbocho is home to about 85 used book shops that sell around 307,000 Japanese books.
Looking through the shelves of a Jimbocho bookstore is like a treasure hunt for a book lover: You'll find books on literature, the classics, history, philosophy, religion, foreign books, books dealing with social and natural science, woodblock prints, books on hobbies, art books and all sorts of other genres and sub-genres.
Because of the several universities in the area, Jimbocho is also a great place to find cheap, delicious (and large-quantity) lunches.
Jimbocho attracts its fair share of foreign travelers, especially those who are fans of Japan's many manga comics. They comb the racks of comics at the many used manga stores in the neighborhood.
Jimbocho is also home to manga specialty shops that deal with hard-to-find titles in certain genres. If you are a fan of the manga art form or of books in general, save some time to roam through the old bookstores of Jimbocho. Who knows, you might find a hidden treasure along the way.
